In the mining sector, infrastructure must perform under some of the most demanding conditions. Heavy operational loads, challenging terrain, stringent safety requirements, and exposure to extreme weather all place significant demands on engineering solutions.
Reinforced soil structures have proven to be an efficient and reliable answer to these challenges, providing the durability, flexibility, and performance required for large-scale industrial developments.
As part of the expansion of the Sagasahi Mines iron ore facilities operated by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) in Odisha, Geoquest India contributed to the construction of reinforced soil structures supporting the site’s development. Working alongside Balajee Infratech & Construction Pvt. Ltd., Geoquest India provided design validation, geotechnical assessment, specialized materials sourcing, and on-site technical assistance.
One of the project’s key challenges was the construction of a Reinforced Earth wall reaching more than 60 m in height, designed to withstand surcharge loads of around 250 kPa while meeting stringent stability and performance requirements.
The project incorporated several Geoquest solutions, including Reinforced Earth walls with GeoTrel wire mesh facing, ArmaStone reinforced soil slopes, and ArmaGreen vegetated slopes, selected to address site-specific geotechnical, structural, and environmental constraints. The design also integrated DrainTube geocomposites for effective drainage, preventing pore water pressure build-up within the reinforced soil wall zone.
Congratulations to the Geoquest India team and all project partners for their successful collaboration on this challenging mining infrastructure project.
