Sustainable retaining walls, abutments and slopes for resilient infrastructure

For more than 60 years, Geoquest has helped infrastructure owners, engineers and contractors deliver reliable retaining structures in environments where conventional approaches reach their limits.

Developed from the original concept invented by Henri Vidal, the Reinforced Earth technique is a proven mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) solution combining engineered backfill, soil reinforcements and facing elements to create durable and adaptable retaining structures.

Infrastructure challenges are becoming more complex

Project stakeholders face increasing pressure to deliver infrastructure that is safe, resilient and sustainable while controlling budgets and construction schedules. At the same time, projects must often be delivered in constrained environments where conventional retaining structures may require extensive excavation, significant concrete volumes or complex foundation treatments. Common project challenges:

  • Weak ground conditions
  • High retained heights
  • Differential settlements
  • Seismic exposure
  • Restricted working areas
  • Accelerated construction schedules
  • Carbon reduction objectives
  • Landscape integration requirements

How the Reinforced Earth technique works?

The Reinforced Earth technique is based on a simple but powerful principle: friction between compacted granular fill and tensile reinforcements creates a stable composite mass capable of retaining significant loads over the long term. This interaction transforms soil into an engineered construction material with predictable mechanical behaviour.

Unlike conventional retaining structures that rely primarily on reinforced concrete and rigid structural elements, Reinforced Earth structures distribute loads throughout the reinforced fill mass. This approach provides engineers with greater flexibility when designing retaining solutions in challenging ground conditions, constrained construction environments or projects requiring optimized material use, while reducing dependence on large concrete structures and complex foundation treatments.

The technique combines three essential components working together to create durable retaining walls, abutments and reinforced slopes capable of supporting significant loads over the long term:

  • Facing elements

Precast concrete panels, steel facings, mineral facings or vegetated finishes provide durability, aesthetics and long-term protection of the reinforced fill mass.

  • Soil reinforcements

Steel or geosynthetic reinforcements mobilize tensile resistance and enhance the overall performance of the structure.

  • Engineered backfill

Selected granular materials create the bulk of the structure and contribute to long-term stability and performance.
